About Stanford Real Estate

Stanford Real Estate (SRE) manages the University’s land endowment, comprised of 14 million square feet of office, Research & Development and hotel assets, and with assets under management currently valued at $5.9 billion. SRE’s mission is investing and optimizing the risk-adjusted value of Stanford’s income-producing lands and it deploys real estate expertise to serve University priorities. Nearly all revenues earned from SRE’s diverse portfolio support the University’s general fund and SRE’s transactions are governed by the Stanford Management Company Board of Directors. SRE is a department within Land, Buildings and Real Estate (LBRE), an entity that serves Stanford University’s academic mission through the development and operations of the University’s 8,180 acres of land holdings. 4,200 of those acres are dedicated for campus and related uses, while SRE oversees the remaining 3,900 acres for commercial, hospitality, residential and agricultural uses. About the Associate Director/Portfolio Controller

The Controller is primarily responsible for all financial reporting to the Stanford Management Company Board of Directors, the Stanford Board of Trustees, as necessary, senior university management, and the Stanford Real Estate leadership team. This individual will provide financial consulting and strategic support to senior SRE management, including preparation of board presentations, capital expenditure analyses, and other projects as requested by senior management. Key areas of focus include monitoring and enforcing a comprehensive set of internal controls, establish policies and procedures around accounting and financial related issues, as well as systems management and oversight.

 

The Controller will report to the Director of Finance and Administration and will lead a team of three, the Senior Accountant, Data/Systems Analyst and Capital Projects Analyst. The ideal candidate is comfortable challenging the status quo and developing creative means to improve processes. They will help build, lead, mentor, and develop a team of diverse and talented accountants or analysts at various levels to accomplish tasks accurately and within specified deadlines. The team oversees the business processes and strategic planning that govern accurate and transparent financial analyses and reports for the Board and senior university leadership, enable productive management and strategic planning for the real estate assets, and improve effectiveness of our internal operating processes.

 

Description of Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the team responsible for timely preparation of financial statements and presentations to the Stanford Management Company Board of Directors, Senior Management, and asset managers.
  • Manage the planning, staffing and staff development, processes, procedures, and internal controls for the reporting of asset and portfolio level results.
  • Collaborates with leaders of multiple departments and senior management to coordinate and plan for the timely and accurate delivery of monthly and quarterly portfolio results.
  • Provide high-level functional and technical expertise in ongoing development of business intelligence solutions and processes supporting SRE financial and performance information delivery and reporting.
  • Lead the ongoing development and implementation of standard operating procedures and policies in support of all data analytics and reports. Identify opportunities to improve manual and automated systems to realize process efficiencies in all functional areas of SRE.
  • Execute value-added analysis and provide decision support for special projects and initiatives.
  • Identify roles and responsibilities of colleagues, as appropriate, as they relate to business intelligence solutions.

 

 

       Candidate Qualifications and Experience:

Master’s degree or Certified Public Accountant and 6+ years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Knowledge and ability to apply, interpret, and implement General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with multiple active deadlines and able to adapt to and proactively communicate changing priorities.
  • The successful candidate will have a passion for leading change, possess a positive attitude, and be hard-working and driven, with a focus on results and accountability.
  • Experience developing and presenting financial results to senior leadership. 
  • Proven results in business operational improvement.
  • Ability to provide guidance, counsel, and information to employees throughout SRE in specific areas of financial results.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proven results providing business partnering to “client” departments within an organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Yardi experience a plus.
  • Excel skills must be advanced with ability to manage large amounts of data.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.
  • Strong leadership and excellent organizational skills with high standards for accuracy and execution required.

 

 

Location

The role is based in Redwood City, CA with the option to work a portion of the week remotely.
