Renaissance Planning () is a planning and urban design consulting firm dedicated to creating cities that work.  We believe that designing well-functioning cities makes our lives better and sustains our environment for future generations. We are city planning professionals with diverse skills in urban design, multimodal transportation planning, land use planning, community engagement, data science, communications, and public policy – we are growing and pursuing creative new staff.

 

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Urban Designer with a passion for creating cities that work – this means an aptitude for creative problem-solving, experience in conceptual design at the streetscape to regional scales, and a collaborative skillset to design with multi-disciplinary professionals to address the challenges of complex, evolving city, environmental, and regional systems.

 

The ideal candidate should have 2+ years profession experience working in urban design or landscape architecture. Additionally, the candidate should have a degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch), Landscape Architecture (BLA or MLA), and/or urban design or planning with an emphasis on physical planning and the graphic depiction of applied multi-modal transportation and land use policy. This job opening is supporting our growing design practice located in Charlottesville, Virginia. However, we are open to hybrid/remote working arrangements for highly experienced candidates as well. Our work helps drive community action and decision-making around public sector policies and investments that influence the built environment and quality of life. Our projects focus primarily on helping communities transform the built environment to create more connected, equitable, and sustainable places. We seek to produce visions, policies, and plans that reflect the aspirations, authentic stories, and rich history of a given place. Our design-oriented projects include developing accessible transit systems for underserved communities, designing equitable transit oriented development (TOD), and creating solutions and plans that break down silos between land use planning and transportation investments. 

 

We are looking for a designer who will listen to diverse stakeholders with open ears, who can see new possibilities with open eyes, and who can tackle the design challenges of the built environment with deft, skilled, and nimble hands. The ideal candidate will have strong visual communication skills, an aptitude for data-informed design, and a collaborative mindset.

Position and Primary Responsibilities

The Urban Designer role requires a professional accredited degree in architecture, landscape architecture, and/or urban design. The Urban Designer is responsible for developing thoughtful design concepts of the built environment and visually compelling communications at a variety of scales from urban to rural contexts. Urban Designers will work with other multidisciplinary professionals in a team-based project environment. This requires strong interpersonal and time management skills with a proactive, self-starting work ethic.

 

Specific tasks will include:

 

  • Creation of computer rendered existing conditions opportunities and concepts through maps, sections, transects, and birds-eye renderings
  • Creation of computer rendered 2D and 3D conceptual designs of the built environment (buildings, streetscapes, streets, open space, etc.)
  • Creation of 2D and 3D prototypical illustrations of urban form
  • Design precedent studies
  • Translation of GIS-based mapping into illustrative, public-facing mapping
  • Programmatic summaries and design details of urban form concepts in narrative formats
  • Production of diagrams and other graphic visuals to convey key analytical, design, or policy insights for use in presentations, reports, websites, and public engagement materials
  • Creation of display boards, print-ready, and web-based document layout and production
  • Coordination as necessary with suppliers, printing houses, etc. to support production
  • Logistical planning, set-up, and facilitation for community engagement

 

Candidates should have demonstrated proficiency in graphic imaging and modeling methods, such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), SketchUp, AutoCAD, ESRI GIS, and/or CityEngine.

Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional knowledge, skills, training, and experience in the field of urban design, including architecture, landscape architecture, and/or environmental design
  • Knowledge of best and emerging practices in city planning and urban form
  • Knowledge of emerging practices in sustainability and resiliency as it relates to stormwater management and open space
  • Knowledge of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and interests in learning Equitable TOD
  • Knowledge of Complete Streets and other multimodal transportation design concepts such as NACTO’s Urban Street Design guidelines
  • Graphic design and interests in info-graphics and/or data visualization skills
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail and excellence in visual design
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team-based collaborative work ethic
  • Proactive, creative, positive, and persistent with strong self-efficacy toward goals and deadlines, especially when working remotely and collaboratively with clients or staff in other locations
